EDUCATION

Access to quality and equitable education for all age groups is the main emphasis of education programs implemented by DAN in different location of Somalia. Using different pathways (formal, NFE, ABE and distance learning) learners are supported to achieve their highest potential through education. In recognition of institutionalized delivery modes, DAN supports actions that strengthen education systems both at the school level and at the government management level.

WASH

Through construction or rehabilitation of water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructures, DAN ensures that communities are protected against health issues caused by consumption of poor-quality water, and lack of adequate sanitation and hygiene practices in the community. Capacity strengthening of management institutions is done to enhance safe and sustainable delivery of WASH services.

HEALTH AND NUTRITION

Increased morbidities and mortalities associated with poor health and nutrition status continues to be experienced in Somalia affecting the social and economic well-being of the population. This has been majorly attributed to a poor health system due to conflict, limited resources, cultural beliefs, taboos and poor infrastructure making timely accessibility to quality health and nutrition services a challenge with children and women mostly affected. DAN in partnership with Ministry of Health and other relevant stakeholders purpose to provide timely and quality essential preventive ad curative services at health facility and community level and linkages between the community and the facility for improved uptake of services and consequently increased coverage. This is being realized and not limited to; Building capacity of health workers and community health workers, integrated community education, provision of health and nutrition supplies

FOOD SECURITY & LIVELIHOODS

DAN’s food security and livelihoods strategy entails promotion of good agricultural practices through training, provision of farm inputs and capacity strengthening of agricultural development institutions. Activities supported by DAN also include livestock and agricultural value chains development and diversification into other agro-based enterprises. For farmers to unlock their potential, DAN has also introduced technology in agricultural enterprises. Dry land farming is part of the agricultural practices promoted by DAN in rainfed areas that receive intermittent rainfall.

GOVERNANCE AND RIGHTS

DAN recognizes that peace and stability are paramount ingredients for sustainable development. Communities can only concentrate and create wealth for themselves when they are assured of their security and that their wealth and assets will be protected.

Project planning and implementation methodologies are embedded in all projects implemented by DAN. Inclusion and rights-based approach that is adopted in all programs ensure that participation of all groups in the community will help win trust and consensus in the planning and implementation of different activities. All project implementation committees receive training in peace building and reconciliation the themes of which are informed by the conflict dynamics in each location.

YOUTH AND WOMEN DEVELOPMENT

Youth constitute the single largest segment of the Somali population. DAN works in programs that promote employability of youth by providing them technical and vocational skills, formation and strengthening of youth cooperatives, provision of seed and business growth capital and entrepreneurship training to increase the participation of youth in profitable micro, small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs). DAN works closely with the private and public sector to promote job-shadowing, internship, and mentorship of the youth by more established entrepreneurs. DAN further promotes networking of youth groups and associations for joint ventures and peer learning. We provide life skills to youth graduating from colleges to allow them to fit well in the labour market and in decisions they make about their lives.
